2016 Barrel Selection Shiraz

Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz

Origin: This is the first single vineyard wine from our winery vineyard, located in the Greenock sub region of the Barossa Valley. Grown at 1.7 tonnes/acre such that the fruit has depth and intensity and a natural tannin structure. This limited release wine comes from a selection of the best barrels in the Massena cellar and only an extremely limited amount if wine is released.

Elevation: 300m above sea level

Bottles produced: 361

Soil Type: Massena has been sourcing grapes from the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley since the first vintage in 2000. The deep red clay soils retain the natural rainfall, whilst also constricting root growth. This combination ensures the vines are healthy, but berry size and yields are modest making an intense but fruit driven style.

Sub Region: Greenock

Winemaking: Hand harvested in the cool of the morning from the oldest vines on the winery estate. Destemmed into open top fermenters and allowed to ferment using the vineyards natural yeast over a fortnight. During this time a combination of délestage and gentle plunging ensure a fine tannin structure and fruit intensity. The wine was matured in a mixture of French and American oak barriques, with only the best selection blended for this limited release wine.

Cellaring: A decade or more.
